Weight Loss Basics

 

 

Weight loss is defined as a reduction of total body mass due a loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue.  We are going to talk about weight loss due to loss of body fat or what is known as intentional weight loss here.

Intentional weight loss refers to loss of total body mass to improve overall fitness and health and change appearance. When losing weight most people will focus on burning body fat as it usually contributes to undesirable appearance, fitness, and health.

Weight loss occurs when more calories are burned off than what is consumed in a day. Reducing your calories intake is the foundation to healthy weight loss. Therefore diets that are lower in calories tend to work best when trying to lose weight. Also, increased physical activity through proper exercise is also another very important piece of the puzzle that is weight loss.

The major benefit of exercise is that it increases the body metabolism naturally causing the body to burn fat, build muscle and burn calories. There are basically three types of exercise each offering unique health benefits.

The first type is stretching. These types of exercise like Yoga for example, loosen the muscle and ligaments thus reducing the possibility of injury or soreness when doing more intense exercises.  It is recommended that stretch you before and after each workout.

The second type of exercise is strength or weight training. This type of exercise involves building strength in the muscles usually by using weights. It builds strength by building muscle tissue making you stronger. Strength training also burns body fat as well.

The last type of training is cardio training. The training exercises the heart and really gets the blood flowing. It also burns the most fat because the body’s metabolism increases significantly.

When losing weight the type of exercise to try really depends how fit or unfit a person is. For example, if a person is obese it is recommended that that person starts their weight loss program by trying cardio training at least to burn that fat. Best case scenario would be for that person to try cardio and strength training to burn fat and build strength. In fact there are quite a few exercise programs out that is incorporate all three types of exercise for optimal results. Typically these workouts will involve a circuit style workout where multiple exercise are done is sets to help increase the heart rate even more. PX 90 is a perfect example of this type of exercise. However weight loss cannot be accomplished without the proper diet.

When losing weight is important to incorporate a good diet plan.  A good diet plan will include healthy recipes that are high in protein, good fat and good carbs and low in calories, bad fat and bad carbs. Eating as much raw food as possible especially fresh fruits, veggies and nuts. Drinking lots of water will help flush the bod of toxins and fat.  

For the ladies there are of course many companies that offer ways to lose weight through dieting and support like Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, and Nutrisystem.  All of which have their pros and cons.

The weight loss industry will have you to believe that you can lose weight simply by taking a pill. Weight loss pills do not help in long term weight loss and many of these products pose serious health risks.

We should note that before you start any weight loss program consult with your doctor at least and a nutritionist.

Basically, healthy weight loss is really about a major lifestyle change. Changing the way you think toward how you eat, what you eat and how you stay fit. Making the change will definitely change your life is you stay committed to being healthy.
